SHAKING THE SIX DEMON BAG: Six Extremely General Questions With Jim Beard

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT’S YOUR DEAL?

I’m the reincarnation of famous chef James Beard and…oh, did I go off the rails again? Sorry.

Ahem, I’m a swashbuckling free-lance writer with a bevy of projects under my belt; comics, comics history non-fiction and now…PROSE FICTION! I’m also a pretty nice guy who digs most things pop culture. And I like XTC and The Beatles. And Mountain Dew Code Red. And pizza. Lots of pizza.

WHAT’S YOUR CURRENT PROJECT?

Glad you asked! SGT. JANUS, SPIRIT-BREAKER was just released by Airship 27. It’s a collection of eight tales of an Edwardian occult investigator of my own creation, in the style of Hodgson’s Carnacki and Seabury’s Jules de Grandin, just to name two classics. My eight stories can be read as stand-alones, but if you read them in order, you’ll find that they begin to link together into a much larger story…with dire consequences for Our Hero, Sgt. Roman Janus.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR INFLUENCES?

Beside the aforementioned writers, I’m probably most influenced by legendary pulp writer Lester Dent, the man responsible for Doc Savage, and of course, the great Walter Gibson, the man behind The Shadow. You can’t be a pulp writer without giving those two gentlemen all the credit they deserve for forming and popularizing the genre. I’m also a huge fan of James P. Blaylock and Robert Heinlein.

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOUR STUFF?

I’ll make it simple for you!

INDULGE IN SOME SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION-WHAT SHOULD WE BE BUYING OR READING OR WATCHING OR LISTENING TO WITH YOUR NAME ON IT?

SGT. JANUS, natch, plus checking in with me every single week on Marvel.com – and watch for some future comics work from me at Bluewater Comics and Sequential Pulp Comics, an imprint of Dark Horse.

But, there’s something coming later this year that rivals my excitement over SGT. JANUS. It’s from Airship 27 and it’s a pulp novel for a licensed character, a well-known character that’s never had a pulp novel, something that’s brand-new to the world of New Pulp. Stay tuned, pulp pals! It’s going to blow you away!
